As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, outdoor playtime becomes an even more essential—and enjoyable—part of the daily routine here at Shooting Star Childcare. We believe fresh air and physical activity are vital for healthy development, but we also know that warmer weather brings unique safety considerations.
The safety and well-being of every child is our top priority, and that commitment extends to every minute they spend running, playing, and exploring outside. Here is a look at the key measures we take to ensure a safe and fun outdoor experience for your child when the temperature rises.

Diligent and Focused Supervision
Our most critical safety measure is always attentive supervision. During warmer months, we reinforce our staffing ratios and positioning to ensure constant, unobstructed visibility of all children.
Zone Coverage: Staff are assigned specific zones in the play area, ensuring every corner is actively monitored. This eliminates blind spots and allows for quick response to any situation.
Active Engagement: Our educators don't just watch; they are actively engaged with the children. This proximity allows them to notice subtle changes in a child’s demeanor (e.g., signs of fatigue or overheating) instantly.
Routine Headcounts: Regular headcounts are performed before, during, and after outdoor playtime to confirm every child is accounted for.
Prioritizing Hydration
Dehydration can occur quickly in children, especially when they are actively playing. We make hydration a non-negotiable part of our outdoor routine.
Scheduled Water Breaks: Water breaks are scheduled every 15-20 minutes, regardless of whether children express thirst. We ensure accessible, cool drinking water is always available.
Water Stations: Easily accessible water stations are set up near the play areas to encourage frequent sips.
Staff Reminders: Our staff consistently prompt and remind children to drink water throughout their time outside.
Essential Sun Safety
Protecting delicate skin from harmful UV rays is paramount. We implement a multi-layered approach to sun protection.
Sunscreen Application: We require all children to have sunscreen applied before coming to the center, and our staff reapply a broad-spectrum, child-safe sunscreen (provided by parents or the center, with permission) at appropriate intervals, usually every two hours, or after water play.
Shaded Play Areas: We strategically utilize naturally shaded areas or structures like canopies and sails that cover a significant portion of our outdoor space, ensuring ample relief from direct sunlight.
Appropriate Attire: We encourage parents to dress their children in lightweight, light-colored clothing that covers the skin, and to send them with wide-brimmed hats. We remind children to wear their hats while playing outside.
Managing Heat Exposure and Temperature
We closely monitor weather conditions and adjust our schedule accordingly to prevent heat-related illness.
Temperature (F) | Heat Index (F) | Action Protocol |
< 85° | < 90° | Standard outdoor play with increased hydration and breaks. |
85°-90° | 90°-95° | Limit intense activity; shorten outdoor periods (e.g., 20-30 minutes); utilize indoor air conditioning for extended breaks. |
> 90° | > 95° | Outdoor play suspended; activities moved indoors with AC. |
Timing: We schedule outdoor play for cooler times of the day, typically early morning and late afternoon, avoiding the hottest part of the day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Cool-Down Breaks: Staff watch for any signs of overheating, such as flushed skin, excessive sweating, or lethargy. Children showing these signs are immediately brought indoors or into a cool, shaded area.
By implementing these comprehensive safety protocols, Shooting Star Childcare ensures that warmer weather playtime remains a joyful, stimulating, and—most importantly—safe experience for every child under our care. We look forward to a summer filled with healthy outdoor fun!
